The American DAT and Canadian DAT are different exams. The biggest differences: the American DAT includes Organic Chemistry and Quantitative Reasoning, which the Canadian DAT does not test, and the two use different section structures and scoring. If you are preparing for one, you need to know exactly which sections apply so you do not waste time studying material that is not on your exam.

Same name, different tests. The Canadian DAT drops Organic Chemistry and Quantitative Reasoning.

The key content differences

The American DAT tests Organic Chemistry (30 questions inside the Survey of Natural Sciences) and Quantitative Reasoning (40 questions), neither of which appears on the Canadian DAT. That means a Canadian test-taker who follows an American study plan will waste time on Organic Chemistry and math they will never see, while an American test-taker needs both. Always match your prep to your exam.

Scoring differences

The American DAT reports scores on the 200-600 scale introduced in March 2025. The Canadian DAT uses its own standard scoring administered by the Canadian Dental Association. If you are taking the American exam, see our DAT score scale explained and what is a good DAT score.

Reading Comprehension is the same skill on both

One thing that transfers cleanly: Reading Comprehension. Both exams give three scientific passages, 50 questions, and 60 minutes, and both state that prior knowledge of the passage topics is not required. The underlying skill, reading dense scientific text quickly and accurately, is identical, so RC practice serves students on either side of the border. See the Canadian DAT RC guide and how to practice DAT RC.

Which resources for which exam

For the American DAT, full-DAT bundles like DAT Booster and DAT Bootcamp cover every section. For the Canadian DAT, DATCrusher is built specifically for the Canadian format. See best Canadian DAT prep resources and DATCrusher vs DAT Bootcamp. For Reading Comprehension specifically, a dedicated RC resource works for both exams, since the section is the same.

Frequently asked

Does the Canadian DAT have Organic Chemistry? No. Organic Chemistry and Quantitative Reasoning are American-DAT only.

Can I use American DAT resources for the Canadian DAT? Partly. Biology, General Chemistry, PAT, and Reading Comprehension transfer; the Organic Chemistry and QR material do not apply.
