Most pre-dental students think DAT RC vocabulary means the words inside the passages. It does not. The vocabulary that matters is the words inside the answer choices.
Tone, best-describes, and synonym questions recycle the same small set of academic words across nearly every form of the test. About 173 words show up so often that knowing them cold is the difference between a 22 and a 25 on those question types.
The DAT does not test your vocabulary breadth. It tests whether you know about 173 specific words.
The three categories that matter
Tone words
Words that describe the author attitude. Cautiously optimistic. Measured. Skeptical. Qualified. Resigned. Approving. Bemused. These are the words that show up in tone-question answer choices, and they are mostly moderate, not extreme. See our tone questions guide for why moderate wins.
Best-describes vocabulary
Words that characterise the function of a paragraph or passage. Refute. Synthesise. Contextualise. Reframe. Concede. Foreshadow. These show up when the question asks what a paragraph does, not what it says.
Rhetorical and abstract nouns
The vocabulary of academic argument itself. Polemic. Apologia. Antithesis. Hyperbole. Cant. Doctrine. These are the words the DAT uses to describe the style of an argument, not its content.
Why memorising works on DAT RC
Memorising vocabulary does not work on the SAT or ACT because their word pools are huge. The DAT RC word pool is small and remarkably stable across forms of the test. Students who learn these 173 words deeply pick up an extra 1 to 2 points on tone and best-describes alone.
This is why the DAT RC Mastery vocabulary deck only has 173 words. We did not decide that number for fun. We pulled the actual answer-choice vocabulary from real RC answer keys.
How to study the list
- 1Do 15 to 20 cards per day for 10 days. That is the full deck twice. Review every card you missed at the end of each day.
- 2Focus on context, not definition.Knowing what a word means in the dictionary is not the same as knowing what it means in a DAT answer choice. Use the example sentences.
- 3Pair the deck with tone questions specifically.Doing 5 tone questions a day while learning the words doubles retention.
- 4Review the full deck once more during the last week.Memory decays. A single refresher pass before the test re-cements the words.
The full vocabulary deck is part of every DAT RC Mastery plan. Start with a free passage and the strategies library.
