The Dental Admission Test is not one test. It is four timed sections stacked back to back, each testing a completely different skill. The DAT at a glance
The DAT contains 280 multiple-choice questions across four sections, delivered in a fixed order. The full appointment runs about 5 hours and 15 minutes including the optional tutorial, breaks, and post-test survey, with roughly 4 hours and 15 minutes of actual testing.
Section 1: Survey of Natural Sciences
100 questions in 90 minutes, combining three subjects into one section: 40 Biology, 30 General Chemistry, and 30 Organic Chemistry. There is no divider between them, so pacing across all three at once is part of the challenge. Section 2: Perceptual Ability Test (PAT)
90 questions in 60 minutes across six visual-spatial subsections: keyhole, top-front-end, angle ranking, hole punching, cube counting, and pattern folding. It tests no academic content at all, only spatial reasoning, which is why it rewards daily practice over cramming. See how to study for the PAT.
Section 3: Reading Comprehension
50 questions in 60 minutes across three scientific passages. Prior knowledge of the topics is not required. It tests how efficiently you read, locate, and interpret dense scientific writing under time pressure. This is our specialty, and it is the section students most often underestimate. Every section rewards a different skill, so a single study method cannot carry all four.
Ranked by difficulty (with the honest caveat)
Difficulty is personal. The section that wrecks one student is another student's easiest. That said, here is how most test-takers tend to rank them, and why.
Often hardest: Perceptual Ability. It tests a skill most students have never trained, and it cannot be crammed. Improvement comes slowly through months of daily reps.
Frequently underestimated: Reading Comprehension. Students assume reading is easy, then run out of time on dense passages. The skill is speed plus accuracy under a brutal clock, and it is very trainable, which is exactly why ignoring it costs points.
Content-heavy: Biology. Not conceptually hard, but the sheer breadth of material makes it hard to feel finished.
Speed-dependent: General Chemistry and Quantitative Reasoning. The concepts are manageable, but the no-calculator time pressure punishes slow arithmetic.
Pattern-based: Organic Chemistry. Once the core reaction types click, it becomes one of the more predictable sections.
What this means for your study plan
Do not split your time evenly. Spend the most time on your weakest section and the sections that reward repetition (PAT and RC especially). Diagnose first with a practice test, then weight your schedule toward what is actually costing you points. For the full plan, see study schedules.
