Biology is 40 of the 100 questions in the DAT Survey of Natural Sciences. It is rarely the most conceptually difficult section, but it is the one students struggle to feel finished with, because the breadth of testable material is enormous. Success in DAT Biology is less about intelligence and more about coverage and retention.
Biology is not hard. It is wide. The challenge is breadth, not depth.
What DAT Biology covers
The section spans the full scope of introductory biology: cell and molecular biology, genetics, evolution and diversity, the structure and function of all major body systems, developmental biology, and ecology and behavior. No single topic dominates, which is exactly why you cannot afford large blind spots. A student who is excellent at genetics but skipped ecology will still leave easy points on the table.
Why breadth is the real challenge
Because the questions are spread thinly across a huge syllabus, DAT Biology rewards wide, shallow familiarity more than deep mastery of a few topics. You are more likely to see one question on an obscure detail than five questions on your favorite subject. That changes how you should study: comprehensive review beats going deep on a handful of areas.
A study approach that works
- 1Read through a complete set of bio review notes once.Do a full pass to map the territory before drilling. You cannot prioritize what you have not seen.
- 2Highlight only what you did not already know.Do not re-study what you have solid. Flag the gaps, and turn those into flashcards, not the whole book.
- 3Use spaced repetition for retention.Biology is a memory game across a wide field. Anki or similar flashcards for your flagged gaps beat rereading.
- 4Do topic-tagged practice questions.Practice reveals which subtopics you actually miss. Let the data, not your feelings, decide what to review.
- 5Review mistakes by concept, not by count. Most improvement comes from understanding why a miss happened, then patching that specific concept.
The best resources for DAT Biology
For content review and question banks, the two most widely used full-DAT platforms are DAT Booster and DAT Bootcamp. Both have extensive Biology lessons, summary notes, and large question banks, and either is a strong choice for this section. Their bio notes plus a flashcard habit is the backbone of most high scorers' Biology prep. We are not a Biology resource ourselves, so for this section a full-DAT bundle is the right tool.
How Biology fits your overall plan
Biology sits inside the 90-minute Survey of Natural Sciences alongside General Chemistry and Organic Chemistry, so your pacing has to work across all three at once. See our Survey of Natural Sciences guide for pacing, and the full section breakdown for how it compares to the rest of the test.
One note on efficiency: many students over-invest in the content sections and neglect Reading Comprehension, which is a trainable skill that moves faster than another biology memorization pass. If RC is your weak spot, that is often where the quickest score gains are. That is the section we specialize in. See how to practice DAT RC.
