The DAT is challenging but very learnable. Its difficulty comes less from any single hard concept and more from its breadth, its time pressure, and the fact that it tests several unrelated skills back to back. What actually makes the DAT hard
Three things, more than raw content difficulty. First, breadth: the Survey of Natural Sciences covers all of introductory biology plus general and organic chemistry, so there is a lot to cover. Second, time pressure: nearly every section gives you barely over a minute per question, and some, like Quantitative Reasoning, offer only a basic calculator. Third, variety: the test switches between memorized science, spatial reasoning, reading, and math, and few students are equally strong at all four.
Section by section
Perceptual Ability is often ranked hardest because it tests a spatial skill most students have never trained and cannot cram. Biology is not conceptually hard but is wide, so it is hard to feel finished. General Chemistry and Quantitative Reasoning are manageable conceptually but punish slow, no-calculator math.
