You do not always need to buy a full-DAT bundle to start practicing reading comprehension. There are free and low-cost ways to get real DAT RC practice, and if money is tight, you should absolutely use them. But free comes with a catch worth understanding before you lean on it.
Free practice is great for reps. It is dangerous as your only gauge of difficulty.
The free and cheap options that actually help
Official DAT sample materials. The ADA publishes sample questions, including RC. These are the closest thing to the real test's style and should be the first free thing you use, precisely because they set an accurate sense of difficulty.
Free trials of paid tools. Most RC tools, including ours, let you try passages free before paying. This is the highest-quality free practice available, because you are sampling material built to real DAT density. Use the free tier to judge whether a tool is worth paying for.
General reading practice. Dense, argument-driven articles from science and humanities publications build the raw reading skill RC tests, even though they are not DAT questions. Free, and genuinely useful for reading speed and stamina.
Library and used prep books. Older DAT prep books cost little used, and your library may have them. The RC passages age well because the section format is stable.
The catch with free RC practice
Free passages vary wildly in quality and difficulty, and easy passages are worse than no practice, because they inflate your score and hide the exact weaknesses you need to find. A student who drills easy free passages walks in confident and gets hit by the real section's density.

How to use free practice without getting burned
